This 18.2GB Barracuda 18LP is a SCSI drive with a Fibre Channel - Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) dual loop interface, making this Seagate hard drive ideal for high-performance storage, video, graphic, and mass data transfer applications. FC-AL supports up to 126 nodes on the loop and a maximum data transfer rate of 100MB per second, but you need to have at least 20 of these Seagate drives installed in a RAID disk array to achieve this transfer rate. Seagate's Fibre Channel drives are not designed for use in PCs, workstations, or standard disk arrays.
The Barracuda 18LP has received Seagate's AV Professional stamp of approval, which means that Seagate has fine-tuned this drive to meet the requirements of today's most demanding audio/visual applications. It features embedded-servo technology to eliminate the need to perform periodic recalibrations which slows down data transfer, making this drive ideal for AV applications. Embedded-servo technology gets rid of data interruptions that cause dropped frames in video applications.
The Partial Response Maximum Likelihood (PRML) technology keeps data clear from background interference and allows Seagate disk drives to increase areal density (disk capacity), boost transfer speed, improve yield through the drive's ability to self-calibrate and lower disk noise. The Barracuda also features Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (SMART) to help prevent data loss and provide advance warning of drive failures.
The Barracuda 18LP boasts an impressive 6.9ms seek time, a large 1MB buffer, and internal transfer rates from 137 to 240Mb per second, enhancing overall drive performance. It is compatible with most popular operating systems including Windows 95/98, Windows NT, and Novell NetWare. The Barracuda's reliability is backed by a five-year warranty from Seagate.
